Standards update

After seeing this I thought I would run it by the ASA in case it was a statement that should be substantiated. Carlsberg can’t say that their beer is definitely the best beer in the world because they can’t prove it so why should the bible thumpers be able to state as fact something that nobody can prove?

Turns out that the Christian Party, as a political party, is exempt from rule which prevent lying. The letter I got from the ASA said that their code prevents them from interfering with the political process.

12.1 Any advertisement or direct marketing communication, whenever published or distributed, whose principal function is to influence voters in local, regional, national or international elections or referendums is exempt from the Code.

I would, of course, argue that the advertisement in question was aimed at recruiting members to the party rather than influence voters in an election. Either way the toothless ASA won’t get involved.

    They even have a website,

    http://www.christianparty.org.uk/

According to their post about the atheist bus campaign

“The Bible is clear that only a fool says “There is no God” (Psalm 53). Even then such a fool only says so inwardly in their heart. They do not spend £140,000 on an advertising campaign. That, I suppose, takes the type of fool that is easily parted from their money.”

Of course completely missing the point that the the bus campaign says there *probably* isn’t a God. Although I have to agree a fool and his money are soon party, especially the sort of fool who spends a fair bit of his own money advertising a fringe political party that stands no chace, as opposed to a large group of people donating to what was essentially two fingers up to the bible bashers.

Maybe a complaint to the electoral comission is in order, unless this is only the start of their huge campaign up to the June MEP elections.

  • commonsensical:

Perhaps the atheist movement currently in its grassroots atages in various universities across the UK could set themselves uo as a political entity and counter-attack with a “There’s probably no idea the Christians have had that’s younger than 2000 years”; or “Every time you place an ad on a bus, you promote the Atheist movement”; or, quite simply, “stop stealing our bus campaign like you stole pagan festivals, you unoriginal bastards”. There’s a whole plethora of things we can hit em with!

  • Commonly Sensible:

While it would of course be acceptable under the ASA CAP code for an Atheist political party to start advertising that there is definitely no god; the whole point is that most atheists, no matter how strong their personal convictions, are aware that negative existential concepts can’t be proved.
